1. What do I need to do to teach in Texas?

Texas residents

  • If you are in an educator preparation program in a Texas college or university, you must receive approval to take a certification examination. Once approval is given, you can acquire a Texas Education Agency identification number by completing an educator profile on the State Board of Educator Certificaton (SBEC) Web site at www.sbec.state.tx.us


  • If you hold a bachelor's degree or higher, you can participate in an alternative certification program. An alternative certification program may involve university coursework or other professional development experiences as well as intense mentoring and supervision during your first year in the role as an educator.
Out of State / Out of Country residents
  • If you hold an acceptable teaching credential from another state or country and are seeking to be certified in the equivalent field(s), you must have your credentials reviewed by the SBEC / Texas Education Agency. The State Board of Educator Certification Web site is www.sbec.state.tx.us After the credentials have been reviewed by the TEA, you will be sent information regarding the tests you are approved to take.

Other Payment Policies
All fees are stated in U.S.dollars.
Payments made by check or money order should be made payable to ETS -Texas Educator.

All payments must be for the full amount. Checks and money orders must be received within 90 days of the date on the payment and have the correct numeric and written dollar amount written or printed on them.

A check in U.S. dollars must be drawn on a bank in the U.S. or Canada. Checks payable in other currencies must be drawn on banks in the same countries as the currencies. By sending your check, be aware that you are authorizing ETS, at its discretion, to use the information on your check to make a one-time electronic debit from your account for the amount of your check; no additional amount will be added.

   
 
     
 

8. Are calculators allowed during testing?

Scientific calculators: Examinees taking Bilingual Generalist 4 -8 (test 119),Chemistry 8 -12 (test 140), English as a Second Language/Generalist 4 -8 (test 120), Generalist 4 -8 (test 111),Mathematics 4 -8 (test 115), Mathematics/Science 4 -8 (test 114),Physical Science 8 -12 (test 137), Science 8 -12 (test 136), or Special Education EC -12 (test 161) will be provided with Texas Instruments TI-30X IIs scientific calculators at the test administration. You may not use your own calculator for these tests.

Examinees taking the following examinations may bring their own personal calculators, if from the approved list. TExES Mathematics 8 -12 (test 135), TExES Mathematics / Physical Science / Engineering 8 -12 (test 174), or TExES Mathematics/Physics 8 -12 (test 143). Graphing calculators will not be provided at the administration.

Only the brands and models listed below may be used. Approved calculator brands and models are subject to change; if there is a change, examinees will be notified. Test administration staff will clear the memory of your calculator both before and after testing. Therefore, be sure to back up the memory on your calculator, including applications, to an external device before arriving at the test site.

9. How do I update my educator profile?

Information in your educator profile can be updated or corrected on the SBEC Web site at www.sbec.state.tx.us

   
 
     
 

10. Can I register by mail?

You can register by U.S. Mail only during the regular and late registration periods. The registration form can be downloaded from the TExES Web site at www.texes.ets.org

   
 
     
 

11. Can I register by telephone?

Telephone registration is only available during the emergency registration period. Call 1-866-902-5922 8:00 AM-5:00PM central time, Monday-Friday, excluding holidays.

   
 
     
 

12. How do I get a study guide?

You can order a study guide from TExES Study Sessions. Follow the directions on this Web site.

   
 
     
 

13. I have a disability. How do I get accommodation?

You will need to complete the Alternative Testing Arrangements Request Form in the registration bulletin, and provide appropriate documentation. If you have questions regarding this please contact National Evaluation Systems (413) 256-2879.

   
 
     
 

14. I have a religious conviction which prohibits my testing on Saturday. How do I arrange a Sunday test date?

You will need to complete the Alternative Testing Arrangements Request Form and provide appropriate documentation.

   
 
     
 

15. How long will it take for me to get my results?

Results are mailed out approximately four weeks after the test date. The mailing date for score reports is printed on the back of the registration bulletin.

   
 
     
 

16. I am in a hurry. Can I get my scores back sooner if I pay an additional fee?

There is no mechanism for getting scores prior to the mailing date. All score reports undergo a number of quality control checks and individual results may not be pulled prior to that time.

   
 
     
 

17. May I test on a day other than those on the schedule?

No, because the majority of tests have performance components which require non-machine grading. Tests are only available on the scheduled dates.

   
 
     
 

18. How many times can I retake a test?

There is no limit on the number of times you may take a test.
